Luis Campusano delivered the game-winning RBI in the 11th inning, and the San Diego Padres rallied to sweep the visiting Milwaukee Brewers with a 4-3 walk-off win on Wednesday.
Jake Cronenworth started the bottom of the 11th as the automatic runner, went to third on a ground-out and remained there as Ty France was hit by a pitch. Cronenworth scored the tying run on Jackson Merrill’s sacrifice fly against Antonio Senzatala (9-4), Milwaukee’s fifth pitcher of the day.
Sung-Mun Song, pinch-running for Ty France, stole second with Campusano at the plate, and came around for the winning run on Campusano’s single to right field.
Milwaukee went ahead 3-2 in the top of the inning when Gary Sanchez doubled to drive in automatic runner Jihwan Bae.
Starting pitcher Robbie Ray gave up two runs on four hits in four innings for the Padres, who have won five straight. Adrian Morejon (9-2), San Diego’s sixth pitcher, struck out four while giving up one run on two hits in extra innings to earn the win.
Brewers starter Dustin May was stellar through seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and fanning six before being lifted in the eighth.
May was replaced by Chad Patrick after he issued a four-pitch walk to Gavin Sheets to open the frame. Patrick got Xander Bogaerts to ground into a double play but struggled afterwards, walking pinch-hitter Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Rengifo in consecutive at-bats and was replaced by Aaron Ashby.
Tatis, who stole second with Rengifo at the plate, came around to score and tie the game 2-2 on Cronenworth’s single off Ashby.
Milwaukee opened the scoring in the top of the second. With two out, Sanchez launched a first-pitch fastball over the wall in left field to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Sanchez went 2-for-4, as the Brewers only managed five hits in 11 innings. They did draw 10 walks, but went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
The Brewers made it 2-0 in the third. Joey Ortiz drew a one-out walk and went to second on a Jackson Chourio ground-out to third. Ortiz then came around to score when Brice Turang connected for a single to center field.
San Diego cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame, with Bogaerts mashing a sweeper 415 feet into the upper deck in left field.
France was the lone Padre with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 before being replaced.
