Ryan Waldschmidt hit a walk-off two-run homer with one out in the ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers 4-3 in Phoenix on Friday, sending Los Angeles to its seventh consecutive loss.
Max Kepler walked to open the ninth off Edwin Diaz (1-1). Pinch runner Jorge Barrosa stole second with one out before Waldschmidt lined a 411-foot homer to left center. It was the rookie’s second homer, his first to end a game.
Andy Pages gave the Dodgers a 3-2 lead with a 425-foot homer to lead off the eighth. Tommy Edman had two hits and an RBI for Los Angeles, which has lost five straight to the D-backs.
Nolan Arenado homered and Geraldo Perdomo had a double, a triple and an RBI for the D-backs, who have won seven of 10 and are 17-8 since July 9, the day before they began a three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium.
Arizona starter Merrill Kelly no-hit the Dodgers for five innings before removing himself with a right leg cramp after giving up two hits and two walks in the sixth, when Los Angeles scored its first run.
Edman broke up the no-hit bid with a scratch single off first baseman Tim Tawa’s glove, but he was picked off. Hunter Feduccia singled and Shohei Ohtani and Pages walked to load the bases.
Freddie Freeman grounded into a forceout at second, bringing in a run. Kelly motioned to the Arizona dugout with his glove and was removed. The Diamondbacks led 2-1, so Kelly was in line for his first career victory in 18 career starts vs. the Dodgers. He is 0-11 against them.
Edman’s RBI single off Taylor Clarke tied the game in the seventh.
The D-backs loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Tanner Scott got Arenado swinging on the 12th pitch of an at-bat to end the inning.
Dodgers starter Roki Sasaki gave up two runs and four hits in six innings, with five strikeouts and a walk.
Arenado homered in the second for a 1-0 lead. It was Arenado’s 35th homer against the Dodgers, second among active players to Paul Goldschmidt (36).
Sasaki slipped on a 2-0 pitch to Tawa with one out in the fifth, which caused a member of the training staff to come out. Sasaki threw two warmup pitches and remained in the game before walking Tawa, who stole second and scored on Perdomo’s triple to right-center, making it 2-0.
Arizona right fielder Corbin Carroll got his glove over the fence to take a home run away from Edman leading off the third.
