North Carolina’s Roy Williams fastest to 900 Division I wins

North Carolina’s Roy Williams became the fourth coach to win 900 Division I games when the Tar Heels notched a 78-70 win over No. 11 Florida State on Saturday.Williams joins Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim and Bob Knight as members of the 900-win club.The achievement was recognized during an on-court ceremony immediately after the contest. Williams was presented with a North Carolina jersey with the No. 900 on it.The 70-year-old Williams (1,161 games) is the fastest to reach the milestone.According to North Carolina, Krzyzewski needed 1,183 games to reach 900. Boeheim hit the mark in his 1,251st game and Knight reached the milestone in his 1,269th contest.”I was focused on one thing — trying to get this team to 15 (wins),” Williams said afterward. “It’s neat and I appreciate all the players who have been involved, and my assistant coaches. For 33 years, I’ve felt like I’ve had the best coaching staff in the whole world …”If I had dropped dead walking out before the game today, I would still had 899. That’s not that far from 900.”
