Bronco Mendenhall steps down as Virginia coach

In another surprising turn of the college football coaching carousel, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall announced his resignation Thursday.Mendenhall will step down following the Cavaliers’ bowl game after six years leading the program.”Clearly this week, there was a sense of clarity to me that I needed to step back from college football and reassess, renew, reframe and reinvent, with my wife as a partner, our future and the next chapter of our lives,” he said in an interview with a local ABC affiliate.Mendenhall, 55, said he decided to resign despite administrators at Virginia requesting that he stay.Virginia went 6-6 in 2021 (4-4 in the ACC) and is just two years removed from appearing in the ACC Championship Game and the Orange Bowl. Mendenhall has a 36-38 record in his six seasons in Charlottesville.
